There are three different ways to search the SOFA database:
Some fundamental explanations how to use the SOFA database

 

In General

Login

After registration and login or after login when already registered the use of the database is free of charge. For the registration only the first and surname as well as the type of institution are necessary. The login will be allowed by giving the email address and a password.

After the login the menu terms on the left side are usable. It is possible to search the database for all the different data, molecules, plants, literature, parameters, fatty acids, sterols, tocopherols and triglycerides individually. In the expert form it is possible to carry out a combined search for plant, literature and molecule.

 

Delta notation

By use of the delta notation it is possible to search for specific structure elements of fatty acids.

 

Each fatty acid is described by a computer readable string.

 

Examples:

Numbers prior to and following a colon represent the basic structure of a fatty acid

c (cis), t (trans), a (acetylene) represent the type of double or triple bound

numbers after delta represent the position of the bonds in the carbon chain

It is also possible to search only for parts of the structure, e.g. %5c,8c% or %0H-9,10%. The input of the term delta does not take place by the Greek symbol D, but by the word “delta”. The input of Greek symbols is not possible.

 

Use of a wildcard character (%)

All terms can be truncated by %. Examples are:

If a search does not show a result it is recommended to use the wildcard in addition to the entered search term, because sometimes the search term is different from the term in the dataset.

E.g. Search for “Aitzetmueller” in the field Author of Search Option Literature will not give any hit, but using “Aitzetmueller%” results in 208 hits, because the entry in the database is “Aitzetmueller, K.” Search for “Aitzetmueller, K.” gives 92 hits.

 

Print out of results

It is possible to print all search results by using the Print-button at the end of the result page. By using this button a new window will be opened showing what will be printed. Using the print option of the used browser it is possible to print the result of the search.

 

German umlauts

In cases where german umlauts (ü, ä, ö) can  to be expected the following characters have to be entered: ue, ae, oe.

Eg. Ölsäure à Oelsaeure; Aitzetmüller à Aitzetmueller.

 

Molecule Form

Here it is possible to search the database for information about the molecules which are available in the database. As criterion different parameters can be used.

The result is a table with all molecules which match the search criteria. If the molecule of interest is in the list it is possible to display all plants in the database which contain this molecule by clicking with the left mouse button on the blue marked MOL ID.

 

Plants Form

This option allows the search for a plant name (e.g. Brassica campestris or Brassic%) AND or OR the name of a family (e. g. Legumin%). It is possible to let one field empty. The resulting list can be sorted ascending or descending by plant name or family name.

The result is a table with all datasets which match the search term(s). By clicking with the left mouse button on the blue marked TAB ID it is possible to open a table with all the information available in the database referring to this dataset.

 

Literature Form

This option allows the search for specific authors, journals and publication years. The publication year can be limited by the boolean operators >=, >, =, < and <=. All search fields in this section can also be combined by the boolean operators AND or OR. It is possible to search for specific researcher groups by using the wildcard. E.g “Earl%” results in all datasets with the author Earle alone and together with coauthors while “Earl%Jone%” shows only results with Earle and Jones as authors.

It is possible to let one field empty. The resulting list can be sorted ascending or descending by author, journal or publication year.

The result is a table with all datasets which match the search term(s). By clicking with the left mouse button on the blue marked TAB ID it is possible to open a table with all the information available in the database referring to this dataset

 

Parameters Form

This option allows the search for different chemical parameters of fats and oils like hydroxyl value, acid value, iodine value, refraction index, etc. as well as the content of nutrients like protein and oil of plant seeds. The parameters can be limited by the boolean operators >=, >, =, < and <=. All parameter can be combined by boolean operators AND or OR.

First, the parameter, the Boolean operator >=, >, =, < or <= and the limiting value has to be chosen or entered. The entry has to be terminated either by Add to Search (and) if the text term shall be combined by the Boolean operator AND or by Add to Search (or) if the next term shall be combined by the Boolean operator OR. If only one term shall be searched the type of the pressed selection button does not matter.

The result is a table with all datasets which match the search term(s). By clicking with the left mouse button on the blue marked TAB ID it is possible to open a table with all the information available in the database referring to this dataset

 

Fatty Acids, Sterols, Tocopherols, Triacylglycerols Forms

These options allow the search for different compounds in four different forms. The application is the same for all forms. For sterols, tocopherols or triacylglycerols the parameters that can be chosen are given in a drop-down list. For fatty acids it is possible to choose the notation and then the name of the fatty acid either as delta-notation, systematic name, trivial name or CAS number has to be entered in the field fatty acid. The parameters can be limited by the boolean operators >=, >, =, < and <=. All parameter can be combined by boolean operators AND or OR.

First, the parameter, the Boolean operator >=, >, =, < or <= and the limiting value has to be chosen or entered. The entry has to be terminated either by Add to Search (and) if the term shall be combined with a term already chosen by the Boolean operator AND or by Add to Search (or) if the term shall be combined with a term already chosen by the Boolean operator OR. It is possible to combine several parameters in one search by the Boolean operators. If only one term shall be searched the type of the pressed selection button does not matter.

The result is a table with all datasets which match the search term(s). By clicking with the left mouse button on the blue marked TAB ID it is possible to open a table with all the information available in the database referring to this dataset

 

Expert Form

In the expert form it is possible to combine the search for plants with the literature and the molecule. The combination of the different sections is possible by boolean operators AND and/or OR. It is not necessary to fill all fields.
